ABOUT PAUL
woodturner | carpenter | designer
Working with wood has fascinated me since early childhood. After finishing school, from 2015 to 2018, I completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter. During this time, I discovered my passion for woodturning. In the beginning, I taught myself the basic techniques using books and videos. Later, I deepened my knowledge through numerous courses with experienced woodturners – and I continue to learn to this day.
A significant source of inspiration for my work is Japan. In 2020, I spent over six months traveling through the country. No other style has shaped my approach to design so profoundly.
In 2020/2021, I completed further training as a “Designer in the Skilled Crafts” at the Academy for Design and Crafts in Munich. As my final project, I created and handcrafted a design for chess pieces on the lathe.
Since 2022, I have been working as a professional woodturner and designer.
I create contemporary and functional objects on the lathe. The design process is a central part of my work. Each piece undergoes an elaborate process – from the first idea through sketches and prototypes to the final form. Both technical and aesthetic details are considered down to the smallest nuance.
In recent years, I have focused especially on the making of chess pieces, bowls, and spice mills. I place the highest demands on the form, function, and surface quality of my objects.
Woodturning is like meditation for me, and I feel a deep connection to my craft: the closeness to the workpiece, the sound of a freshly sharpened tool working its way into the wood, the long shavings flying through the workshop – all of this continues to fascinate me.
THE WORKSHOP
Most of my work takes place at my lathe – a Vicmarc VL240. I mainly use traditional Western turning tools and contemporary techniques. Here’s a glimpse into my current workshop in Munich.
