ORIGINAL VERSION
premium chess sets for timeless play
My original design since 2021. These chess sets combine unique design with maximum functionality. As a passionate chess enthusiast, I have thoroughly studied the requirements of a tournament chess set and carefully considered every detail. With a king height of 95 mm (3.75 inches), all dimensions and proportions comply with the standards of the World Chess Federation (FIDE). As is standard for tournament sets, the set includes two extra queens for pawn promotion. All pieces are weighted. I craft these premium chess sets to the highest standards of form and quality.
CRAFTMANSHIP
The pieces are created through a unique combination of modern woodworking technology and traditional craftsmanship. The rough shape is first pre-turned on a CNC lathe. I then mount each blank on my own lathe and refine the final details by hand: lines are sharpened, transitions are smoothed, and the surface is carefully sanded. The knight’s head is hand-carved.
WEIGHTING
Weighting plays a crucial role in tournament chess pieces. It gives the pieces significantly more stability and prevents them from tipping over easily during play. Moreover, a well-balanced piece feels noticeably more refined and high-quality in the hand. In one of the final steps, stainless steel weights are glued into the drilled cavities of the pieces. Finally, the bases are finished with high-quality felt pads.
CUSTOM CHESSBOARDS
frameless & timeless
The chessboards for these pieces are custom-made creations, crafted by the last remaining German chessboard manufacturer according to my exclusive design. The frameless board is veneered on both sides, with edges made from high-quality solid wood. This allows for a particularly wide bevel on the underside, giving the board a “floating” appearance. This aesthetic effect not only adds visual appeal but also makes the board easier to lift. With dimensions of 440 x 440 mm and a square size of 55 x 55 mm, the board meets the standard FIDE regulations and offers ideal proportions for play.
WOODS & COLORS
In my “Original Version,” you can choose from different types of wood and color combinations for the pieces and the board. For the light pieces, I use maple; for the dark pieces, either walnut or black-stained ash. The classic chessboard is made from maple and walnut, while a lighter variant combines maple with oak. This results in three harmoniously matched variations. For the surface treatment, I use natural hard oil waxes – which give the surface a silky matte finish, a pleasant feel, and high durability The pieces and board are securely stored in a high-quality cardboard box with a custom-fit foam insert.
